Up at Dawn, 12 x 16, oil on linen, #428

On Saturdays, workers who have other jobs can often take some time off to go out to their fields to get some agricultural chores done. This mule was all ready for work shortly after the sun came up on a sunny September Saturday morning, out by Our Lady of the Upper Village outside of Langada, on Amorgos, in the Cyclades.  I was taken by the way the sun coming over the mountain highlighted the mule. The lighting IS really nice, and the donkey’s head is done beautifully. Its nose looks so soft, and it feels like a conscious animal is aware of the viewer.
