Woods Diptych, 20 x 8, oil on linen panel, #396

Today was the second plein air day of the year for me. Our group went out to the wonderful property of one of our members and the morning turned out to be sunny! I don’t think anything can match feeling warm sun on your back while painting after a winter of working at an easel indoors. I really liked the way the sky was so blue against the trees, but only brought 8 x 10 panels with me; hence, the diptych.

Cleaning and Painting, #395

Posted March 13th, 2013 by | 1 Comment

I’ve been cleaning out my studio for the last few days. It’s incredible how fast stuff piles up! I think it’ll feel good when it’s all finished, but gosh, it’s a bigger project than I imagined. Meantime, I started another cow painting. Just a diversion…

Model on Red, 18 x 24, oil on canvas panel, #394

Life drawing today. Both models made it such a joy to work at the challenge of portraying them. They chose great poses, got right back into them after the breaks, and never “drooped” or “wilted.” Bravo to the models who’re willing to help us learn!

Bull, first session, 24 x 30, oil on linen, #391

Posted March 3rd, 2013 by | No Comments

Today’s painting time was consumed with thinking about this painting, and then putting on the first value phase of the paint. I’m not too sure how it’ll develop from here. I want to stay away from the “black” of this black bull, but still not make him too, too colorful!

Red Cow, 12 x 16, oil on canvas, #390

Posted March 2nd, 2013 by | No Comments

While painting with friends, I decided to paint “Too Bossy” from memory. It was an interesting experience for me; I remembered the general shapes in the painting, which surprised me. I used red for the cow, since I’ve been concentrating on warm colors lately. I was happy with the reds in the big shape, but not with the greens.
