View from Grasser’s Hill, 6 x 8, oil on canvas, #212d

Posted July 31st, 2012 by | 1 Comment

Another sketch from the Mitch Albala workshop. This was painted atop Grasser’s Hill, overlooking Penn Cove. There were a lot of different views from up there, and Mitch encouraged us to explore different compositions. It was interesting just to draw them and try to see if we could work them out. In the case of this sketch, I followed his recommendation to lighten the background so that the water would lie down more.

Flagler Pond Study, 8 x 10, oil on canvas, #211

Kind of a grey day for plein air, but the group went to Fort Flagler on Marrowstone. I tried to stick within Mitch Albala’s parameters of 3-7 shapes and 3 or 4 values. The value sketch worked out better than the painting.

Blue Highway, 10 x 8, oil on canvas, #210d

This is the value study (#208) with color and a few changes. Note the beige areas at the top right of the bluff, which Mitch Albala smudged with his finger.  Made a big difference, keeping them discernable, but holding them within the value range.

Today was value study day in Mitch Albala’s landscape workshop. This was the first one I did with Mitch, trying to limit the number of shapes and values in the painting.

Still working on this one. The photograph really helps me see what’s next, though I probably can’t get to it before next week!

Visit to the Garden Value Study, 40 x 30, oil on canvas, #206

I began this directly in a larger size, rather than progressing up from smaller studies, just to see how the process would feel. I guess the jury will be out for a while, as it will take me some time to finish this painting, what with other things going on.

PT Dock, 8 x 16, oil on linen panel, #205d

This is the color version of yesterday’s sketch. I edited out the second boat, but may add it back in again for balance.  Seeing it now, in the photo, I think it could use it!  One other issue:  the dock isn’t quite as yellow in the painting.

PT Dock Value Study, 8 x 16, oil on linen panel, #204

This morning was so cold and windy at the Maritime Center in Port Townsend that our plein air group almost left to head for the warmth of a coffee shop. Most stayed, though, and enjoyed the changing skyscape over the bay. I tried to warm up the scene a little with a burnt umber underpainting. Still a little work to do on top layers.
